5 Things To Consider When Naming Your Startup

Naming your company may be the last thing on your mind. You want your software to be flawless, and your dream team in place, but the reality is that your name can make or break your business.

Here’s what you should consider when you start the brainstorming process.

    • What does your name say to your customer: Your company name should reflect what service you will be providing. Choose a name that not only appeals to you, but to the kind of customer you want to attract.
    • Get creative: Think Acura -- it’s not a real word, but it evokes accuracy. Your name doesn’t necessarily have to be in the dictionary, but be sure it makes sense to your company. If your services aren’t as complex, try a unique spelling like Compaq did. This decision will also save you money when it comes time to trademark!
    • Avoid Lawsuits: For example, there was a company named DataOracle. This is a huge no no that could stop you before you even start. Oracle is one of the largest tech companies in the world, with a trademarked name, so making a mistake like that could cost you.
    • Test your name: You can do this one of two ways: ask your employees since they know what you do and it shows you trust them, which will create a huge boost in morale. Or, set up a focus group since it’s a great way to get an unbiased opinion.
    • Final decision: Now that you’ve narrowed it down, choose something that not only reflects your company now but will also work 5, 10 and 20 years down the line.

If you keep all these things in mind, you can make your company unique and useful. Just remember your name is your first impression, so make it a great one!
