5 Things We Learned From Our Co-Founder and Resident Father

Working at a startup, you often look to your founders for leadership and if you're lucky, you have founders who invite you into the experience of growing a startup and you are filled with a wealth of knowledge. You're even more lucky, if you have a co-founder who's a father of four boys and everyone knows it. And by everyone knows it, we mean, he's an awesome dad and we all get to witness it.

Here are five things we've learned from our resident father:

1. Dad jokes can be used on demo calls with potential clients. "Please, excuse me. It seems like I've picked up a cold and this Australian accent...". We also never run out of puns here. We might actually keep tabs on how many accent jokes he makes.

2. Sometimes you need to give your child a pep talk. When your child needs reassurance or encouragement, it's perfectly okay to take some time from your busy day and spend a few minutes talking to your son on the phone even if you work in a one room office where the entire company can hear you. Priorities. Having worked with children, I can't help but smile and think that more parents need to do that.

3. Take your kids on on cool trips. Whether it's a weekend camping trip or not, planning trips with your children while running a business is key to spending quality one on one time. If you work in tech, going somewhere with limited cell service makes the world of difference to your kids. They know when you're disconnected and guess what, they love it.

4. Teach your kids about what you do. Not all your kids will want to be like you, but one might pick up your interest, like coding, and want to please you so much that they create their own website with a special "I LOVE MY DAD" message on it. And that, is priceless.

5.  Realize it's okay to ask for help or hire a nanny but ALWAYS try your best to be there for them. Whether it means missing team happy hours or leaving early to make it to your child's preschool graduation, at the end of the day your child will remember these moments and they are the ones that matter most.

Being a dad and a co-founder of a quickly growing startup is tough. Some of you have a company on your shoulders as well as the well being of your children, and in this case, our co-founder has the well being of four boys. Whether you're a single dad or married, remember that your kids come first and your team will always be okay (and probably better) because of that.

Happy Father's Day to our Co-Founder and CTO Adam Broadway!
