If you’re an Uber, Lyft or Sidecar driver, should you be reimbursed for the following items?
-
Bridge toll?
-
Gas?
-
Car maintenance?
Well, many Uber drivers think you should. According to a recent article written by Arun Sundararajan (@digitalarun) on FT.com, these items plus benefits and other job securities should not be limited to only salaried employees.
“Health coverage, insurance against workplace injuries, paid vacations and maternity leave: these have long been universal entitlements in many economies. They should not become exclusive perks for a dwindling band of salaried employees.”
Sundararajan proposed a market-based solution similar to how retirement plans on private pensions are done. He goes on to say that the freelance, independent contractor, and peer-to-peer marketplace economy is not going anywhere, even citing a report that 80 percent of freelancers say they would not choose a different structure of work.
At Near Me, we know that these worker’s needs should be considered and the old labor laws should be revisited for the new era of work. Marketplaces are popping up, workers are using them, and they are here to stay.
What do you think should be done?
