Lyft has been in the news a lot this past week with their latest announcements to make life easier for their drivers. They are beginning to install a new system that incorporates cheaper gas, lower car rental prices and a real-time payment system that frees the driver with the ability to cash out whenever they want. In an article for TechCrunch, Sarah Buhr (@sarahbuhr) discusses what these major updates might entail.
Lyft co-founder, John Zimmer, stressed the importance of taking care of their drivers. In his words,
“It’s part of the origin story to treat people better. We want to make sure we are the company that treats you better than anyone else.”
According to Lyft, over 60 million Americans over the age of 25 don’t have a car and over 20% of their applicants don’t have cars that fit the necessary requirements to be a driver. Lyft plans to tackle this problem by teaming up with Hertz car rental service to offer lower rate car rental services to drivers who don’t have a car that day.
Along with the partnership with Hertz, Lyft has also announced a partnership with Shell to give drivers a discount at the pump based on the more they drive. This decision is sure to be impactful as Shell has over 12,500 gas stations in the U.S. and Lyft has over 100,000 active drivers. As the head of operations strategy, David Rust explained, drivers would have the ability to discount $2 per gallon as soon as they enter a personal pin to the system as they pump gas.
The most well-received decision, however, was the announcement about the addition of Express Pay, which will give drivers the ability to cash out immediately after a ride. The process works by drivers taking rides, receiving updated earnings, then tapping a button to transfer the money directly to their bank account. As soon as a driver receives $50 in earnings they will have the ability to cash out.
Lyft has been trying to improve their customer service to the riders, as we saw earlier in the year with their Starbucks partnership. With this latest announcement, we see how seriously they are tackling their care of drivers.
