In a recent article by Jayson DeMers (@jaysondemers) on Entrepreneur, he sorts out the pros and cons to starting a business while working a full time job. People seek to start their own business for many reasons, but leaving your full time job to become a first time entrepreneur can be a risky decision, to say the least. This is why many entrepreneurs are also 9-5’ers.
Managing both work loads isn’t easy, according to the many entrepreneurs we encounter here at Near Me, it’s extremely time-consuming. Although it’s feasible, it’s definitely not for everyone. Before making a hasty decision between the two, make sure you’re aware of the pros and cons to working full time while juggling your own business:
Pros to working full time while managing your own business:
- Job security
- Financial security
- Networking opportunities
- Be your own boss
- 401K (If applicable)
- Company benefits (paid vacation, sick leave, insurance, etc)
Cons to working full time while managing your own business:
- Extremely time-consuming
- Losses will be greater than profits for a given period of time
- The possibility of burning yourself out is extremely high
- Weekends and weeknights will be the prime hours of work for you own business
- Personal/social life will be non-existent or extremely limited
If you’re seeking to start your own business, don’t be swayed by the fear of failure. Your success depends solely on performance. What you put in is what you will get out. Get to know your work habits and performance, and evaluate your circumstances; then, you’ll know if you’re ready to take on both.
My advice to entrepreneurs working a full time job: keep working the full time job. Yes, it may be tedious, tiring and difficult, but it will be rewarding in the end. Rather than ditching a secure job, wait until you are 100% sure your new business idea can provide a foreseeable future.
If down the line one comes to the realization that they can no longer manage both, the beauty of keeping both jobs is, you can always put your own business to the side until being fully able to commit once again.
